British Football Record Attendances

Record attendances in British football

Football fans are obsessed with stats, facts, figures and attendances, and so are we. That's why we've dived into the history of football to find each team and each stadium's record attendance for all major clubs in Great Britain.

Modern day super stadiums and health and safety laws means that today's ground capacities are capped way below the numbers that many teams used to get in the olden days. Some of these record attendance may never be broken.

Below, you'll find all of the important records for each major team in Britain. Teams which have had multiple stadiums are on there multiple times (eg, we have Sunderland at both the Stadium of Light and Roker Park). We've also included teams who have played "home" games at different stadiums (eg, both Arsenal and Spurs have used Wembley Stadium as their temporary home whilst their new grounds were being built). We have also included any records set by the national team (eg, the record attendance at Pride Park was actually set in an England v Mexico friendly - Derby's record at Pride Park is also on our list).

Quick facts

If you're an attendance boffin, you might want to check out our article about the largest football attendances ever recorded.

Record Attendances - Win Percentage

Teams are much more likely to lose their record attendance match. The main reason for this is that most record attendances have been set for either cup matches or league matches against one of the "bigger" teams. Historically, that has resulted in more defeats for the team setting their attendance record.

Record Attendances - Overall Goals Record

Add together all the goals scored by the home teams vs all the goals scored by the away teams and away teams are the winners. Over the 222 matches we've analysed, that makes an average score of 1.26-1.82.

Record Attendances - Biggest Wins, Biggest Defeats and Most Goals

Derby County and Chesterfield both ran riot when setting their record attendances, running out 5-0 winners vs Spurs and Rotherham respoectively. Cove Rangers and Southampton both recorded 4-0 win in their recaord-breaking days too.

Some teams have had a nightmare though. Worst being Forfar Athletic who were turned over 0-7 by Rangers 1970. Rangers were a it again in 2013, handing Airdrieonians a 0-6 beating. Sutton, Boston, Accrington and FC Edinburgh have all shipped in 6 goals in home defeats in front of bumper crowds.

A dozen records have ended in 0-0 draws, but we've had some absolutely goalfests as well - none more so than Aldershot's 2-6 deafat at home to Brighton in 2000. A further 11 games have produced 7 goals including 4-3 thrillers for Cambridge, Forest Green, Oldham, Hartlepool, Gretna and Aston Villa.

Record Attendances - By Decade

Football's popularity (and the size of stadiums) grew in the 1930s and 1950s, with most club's record attandances set in these two decades. The 17 records set in the 1940s are particularly impressive, taking into account the league suspension for World War II. A lack of investment in stadiums shows in the 1970s and 1980s before the Hillsbrough Disaster brought around the change in requirement to all-seater stadiums.

Some of clubs which built new stadiums are bigger than the ones they replaced, leading to a healthy number of records set since the year 2000.
