First Game
A game between Leyton Orient and either Bristol City or Bristol Rovers, in whatever the AWS is/was then called; it ended in victory for Orient by 2 goals to something and happened in the middle of a week.
The first Colchester game I saw was a 2-2 draw with Cambridge at Layer Road in December 1996.
Best Game
1. Colchester 4-3 Hull City, c. 1998. Colchester going for the playoffs, Hull really struggling and (I think) no away wins all season. 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3 in injury time.
2. Yeovil 0-0 Colchester, 2005. Actually a rubbish game, but we got promoted to the Championship.
3. Colchester 1-0 Ipswich, 2006. I've seen better games, but for sheer intensity this has to be the best.
4. Colchester 5-1 Hull City, 2006. Phil Parkinson took us up, left us for Hull, and returned to lose heavily.
5. Norwich City 1-7 Colchester United. There's nothing you really can say. Look it up on YouTube. Note that the '1' scored by Norwich involved a handball.
It won’t let me choose old grounds, but the best atmosphere was always at Layer Road.
