has rated Hurst Cross 3.5 out of 5.

johnwickenden's review of Hurst Cross

I visited Hurst Cross to watch Ashton Utd take on FC United of Manchester in a pre-season friendly. The ground is an old fashioned non-league ground, probably good enough for a level above the Northern Premier League. The ground is surrounded by housing and the predominant colour is red, showing support for the home side.

Location

The ground is located in the Hurst suburb of Ashton-under-Lyne, about a half a mile (or 15 minute) walk from the town centre with it's pubs, places to eat, railway and bus stations. There is no parking at the ground itself, but I left my car in the surrounding residential streets with no problems

View

The ground has a very traditional feel to it. The Main stand, with the changing rooms etc straddle the halfway line and seat approximately 250 spectators, giving them a raised view of procedings. The far side of the ground features a long covered terrace. The ends behind the goals are both terraces - the one to the right of the Main Stand is uncovered, whilst to the left the terrace features the Roy Donnelly stand which provides cover for a limited number of spectators.

Facilities

Toilets are by the main stand. There is a club shop locaed in a portacabin next to the Main Stand, club offices etc. This sells a variety of old books, programmes etc as well as club shirts, scarves etc.

Food & Drink

Didn't sample anything from the tea bar but the menu looked to sell the usual fayre at reasonable prices and plenty were spending their hard earned cash.

Police & Stewards

Unusually for a pre-season friendly there were stewards in attendance, but they mostly contented themselves with retrieving lost balls

Atmosphere

Pretty good for a PSF. The crowd was 250-300 with a few FCUM folks in evidence. The crowd behind the goals were quite vocal so I expect there is normally quite a good atmosphere here
