Italian Serie D club to build new 12,000 seater stadium

Italian Serie D club Casertana have announced plans to build a new 12,000 seater stadium.

The capacity will be expandable up to a maximum capacity of 16,000 after a project which will take 3 years to complete and cost around €50m.

Founded back in 1908, Casertana has never played in Serie A, having only managed 2 seasons in Serie B in their 114 year history.

The town of Casertana is approximately 45 minutes north of Naples.

Farul Constanta have announced plans to build a new stadium, named after Romanian legend Georgie Hagi.

The Liga I club will build a new 18,000 capacity ground at a cost of around £85m. The stadium will be built to UEFA Category 4 specifications and also incorporate a separate 1,000 seater training stadium.

The club has been playing home matches this season at the 4,500 capacity Stadionul Viitorul after their traditional home ground fell into a state of disrepair.


Milwaukee gets USL franchise

The city of Milwaukee has been awarded a USL franchise.

The team will join the equivalent of the second division in the United States in 2025, playing at a brand new 8,000 seater stadium.

The stadium will be part of a larger development which will also include a 3,500 capacity indoor arena and 140 residential units as well as a hotel and retail dining outlets.

The area will also host soccer and lacrosse teams from the University of Milwaukee. Construction should begin before the end of 2022.

The city of Kyiv has opened a brand new football stadium, despite the Russian invasion.

3rd tier Ukrainian side Livyi Bereh Kyiv’s new 4,7000 capacity stadium has been built to a standard which will allow it to host the nation’s youth and women’s team internationals in the future.

Livyi Bereh haven’t started playing again since the invasion, but are planning to do so from the start of the 2023/2024 season.

Birmingham hope to have St Andrew’s back to capacity for start of next season

Birmingham City have used the World Cup break to restart repair work to St Andrew’s.

The Championship club has been forced to close large areas of the stadium for more than two years due to structural faults. This has reduced the capacity down from 29,500 to around 19,000.

Part of the strengthening work will be completed during the World Cup, with the last part done after the end of this season. If all goes to plan, St Andrew’s will re-open at full capacity at the start of the 2023-2024 season.

Greek giants AEK Athens have opened their new 32,000 OPAP Arena.

The stadium is built on the site of the club’s former home, Nikos Goumas Stadium which hosted AEK matches from 1925 through to 2003.

The Greek Super League side’s new home took just over 5 years to build, costing around €100m.

Polish side Pogon Szczecin have completed renovation on the Stadion Miejski.

The Ekstrakasse side fully opened the stadium with a 2-1 victory over Lechia Gdansk.

The £65m project took 3 years to complete and saw the capacity drop from 18,000 to just 4,000 as the team continued to play there.

The modernisation has brought the standards up in and around the ground, with a capacity now in excess of 20,500.

Stockport planning to redevelop Edgeley Park

Stockport County have revealed plans to redevelop Edgeley Park into a 20,000 capacity stadium.

The League Two club have started the first phase of a public consultation programme after agreeing a new 250-year lease for the ground earlier this year.

The plans include totally rebuilding the East and South stands to provide modern facilities and bring the roofline level with the existing West stand. The final phase would be to extend the North stand to cover the full length of the pitch.

The plans are part of County's desire to be playing Championship football within the next 7 years.

The club aim to apply for planning permission by the end of the year, with work on the East stand potentially starting as early as next summer.

Romanian club FC Arges have announced plans to build a new €100m stadium.

The club finished 4th in Liga I last season and hope that the new stadium will welcome European football when it opens in 2 years time.

The new ground will have a capacity of 15,000 and will be built to UEFA Category 4 standard, meaning it will be capable of holding international matches.

The new stadium will incorporate eco-friendly features such as solar panels on the roof and electric car charging stations as well as boxes, areas for other sports and a number of junior and training pitches close to the main stadium.

Arges are based in the city of Pitesti, around 100 miles north west of the capital, Bucharest.

The recent North London derby has set a new Women's Super League attendance record, as 47,367 fans saw Arsenal beat Spurs 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

The attendance smashed the previous high of 38,362 which was set for the corresponding fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

Elsewhere in the WSL, a stadium record 27,574 saw Everton beat Liverpool 3-0 in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

It has been a great year for women's football in the UK, with Euro 2022 setting several new attendance records including:

  • Highest attendance at a final (87,192 England v Germany at Wembley Stadium)
  • Highest attendance in the group stages (68,871 England v Austria at Old Trafford)
  • Highest cumulative attendance (574,975 an average of 18,544 per match)

FC Basel to reduce stadium capacity in facelift

FC Basel are to reduce the capacity of their stadium as part of a facelift of St Jakob Park.

The Swiss Super League side have played at the stadium since it was opened in 2001. After 20 years of use, the club has decided to spend up to £60m updating the stadium's shell and interior.

The planned work will include a new eco-friendly shell which will wrap around the stadium and be able to produce its own electricity.

Inside the ground, concourses will be widened and executive boxes refurbished.

The stadium capacity will be reduced by around 2,500 seats to just over 33,000. This should still be fine for the club who haven't averaged over 25,000 since the 2018/2019 season. It would also retain its position as the largest stadium in Switzerland.

Aston Villa have released plans to increase the capacity of Villa Park to 50,000.

The English Premier League side has received overwhelming support from the local community with almost 93% of respondents in favour of the redevelopment.

The first phase of the plans would include a rebuild of the North Stand wrapping into the Trinity Stand. This is expected to add another 7,500 seats, taking the Villa Park capacity to over 50,000.

The club also plans to build a new standalone venue called Villa Live which would feature a museum and shop as well space for local communities.

Villa are also looking ahead to further expansion, possibly as soon as 2025. The initial phase of development is expected to cost around £100m, with a decision on planning permission due later this year. The club are currently averaging over 41,500 this season, up more than 10% on last year's average of 37,000.
