johnwickenden's review of Hertingfordbury Park

I visited this ground to watch Hertford Town play Waltham Abbey in the Isthmian League Div 1 North , Hertford having been promoted to this level for the first time last season, Hertingfordbury Park is an old fashioned ground and has quite a lot of character. It is fine for Step 4 and actually must have been one of the biggest grounds at Step 5.

Location

The ground is situated at the end of East Street in the south of Hertford. It's about 10 mins walk from the town centre and it's pubs and restaurants and 15-20 mins walk from either Hertford North or Hertford East Stations. There is some parking on site (be careful you don't block the entrance to the stables) but plenty of parking in East Street itself. The nearest pub is The Black Horse which is about 5 mins walk.

View

The Main stand offers a raised view of preceedings and has about 150 seats which are a mix of plastic and old fashioned wood. Unfortunately, although full of character, the stand suffers from the front stanchions blocking the view towards the goals. The right hand end (known as the Stable End) is a covered terrace running the full width behind the goal. The other two sides of the ground are uncovered.

Facilities

Toilets are in the bar / clubhouse. There is a small club shop which is housed in a wooden shed between the bar and main stand. The programme was decent value for £1.

Food & Drink

Beers etc are available from the bar. There is a refreshment kiosk next door which sells a wide variety of burgers, chips etc. A cheeseburger cost £3.20.

Atmosphere

The crowd was 130 which was the smallest so far this season but the locals are quite a noisy bunch with a drummer and air horn. They took great delight in putting the Waltham Abbey goalkeeper off from goal kicks. Noisier than most Isthmin league grounds I've visited
