Freiburg banned from playing in new stadium at night or Sunday lunch

Sunday 20th September 2020

In a bizarre ruling, a court in Germany has decided that SC Freiburg will not be allowed to play league games in their new stadium at night or on a Sunday lunchtime.

The German Bundesliga side are hoping to move into the new 35,000 capacity SC Stadion later this season, but have met opposition from local residents.

A district court in Germany has now ruled that 1pm to 3pm on Sundays and after 8pm every day is classified as a "quiet time" and as such the club will be unable to play league matches during those times. The rule however, does not cover domestic or European cup matches.

The club are confident that they can get the ruling overturned before they move into their new £70m home, and will take the case to the German High Court, if necessary.
