"Classic ground but needs work"

callumloughlin's review of Selhurst Park

My overall experience of selhurst park was ok. Around the ground it's quite disappointing as there isn't much for away fans. Because there was only 1 pub lettingaway fans in we decided to go into the round at 1:15pm for a 3:00pm KO. Getting into the ground is fairly easy and I live the classic turnstiles. Once through you enter an open air section of the concourse where there is a bar. Further up after a couple of steps it's the inside section. There isn't much room for movement around the concourse and they only have 1 tv showing the dinner time KO so it's very crowded around that spot. The toilets are good. Plenty of room and not much waiting for a space. When you walk down onto the stand there is the disabled section. You will either go up or down the stairs. In my case it was up. I was on the second to back row and the view was pretty much terrible to say the least. I couldn't see the far touchline at all. I decided to have a walk down to the bottom to take a look at the ground. Selhurst park is what I call a proper football ground. Stands close to the pitch and home and away fans closely cramped together. I got talking to a steward who was brilliant. The bloke had some great praise for sheffield united and certainly knew his football. I then had a walk back into the concourse and it had just started to get busy. The DJ in the outside area was in full swing and getting fans involved which was great. He was also taking song requests which was even better. It was all going well to be fair until he played hi hi silver lining. He soon switched it off when he realised our fans weren't best pleased. One flaw was that when the outside area starts getting busy and fans are still coming in through the turnstiles it can get quote cramped and difficult to move. I was back in my seat for the start of the game and the atmosphere for the away fans was good to start off with. First half was pretty boring so not much to shout about. Through the second half the atmosphere from the palace fans improved but I've got to say it didn't live up to what some fans make it out to be. After the game it's straight out of the ground and coaches are parked right outside. There was a little bit of group be between sets of fans after the game but noting too major. After around 15 mins on the coach we had set off. The worst part of the day is getting away from the ground. Traffic through Croydon was a nightmare and getting to the M25 was like snails pace. Overall it was a great day with a fantastic 1-0 win for sheffield united on the day.
