Las Palmas in plans to increase capacity of Gran Canaria stadium in World Cup bid

Wednesday 1st November 2023

The Spanish island of Gran Canaria is to expand its main stadium in the hope of hosting World Cup matches in 2030.

The Estadio de Gran Canaria is already the largest in the Canary Islands and is home to La Liga side Las Palmas. The 32,000 capacity ground will be modernised into a 45,000 capacity stadium with an extended roof covering all seats.

The local council has announced the plans but insists they will go ahead even if the island isn't used as a World Cup venue. Las Palmas have only once achieved an attendance of more than 30,000 since their return to the Spanish top flight this season.
