Helsinki Olympic Stadium reopens after renovation

Thursday 20th August 2020

Helsinki's Olympic stadium has reopened after a €350m renovation which has modernised the 82 year old ground inside and out.

The 36,000 capacity ground is by far the largest in the country and is occasionally used to host the Finnish national team.

The stadium was originally opened in 1938 having been built for the 1940 Olympics. The Games were cancelled due to World War II, but the stadium did host a post-War Olympic Games in 1952.

Prior to renovation, the stadium hosted 5 matches at Women's Euro 2009, including the final where Germany beat England 6-2.

The new look Olympic Stadium is due to host the 2022 UEFA Super Cup.
