Who could top clubs sign if they had the opportunity to bring back their legends?

Who could top clubs sign if they had the opportunity to bring back their legends?

The winter transfer window has opened, and we decided to indulge in a little fantasy about how teams could be strengthened if they could sign any of their former players in their prime. And for those who want to combine their love of football with some off-pitch excitement, winbeast.com is a great place to explore, offering a mix of sports-themed games and online entertainment.

Let's be clear: following the obvious paths—Messi to Barca, Ronaldo to Real Madrid, or Maradona to Napoli—would be too predictable. Instead, we focused on players who could address each team's most pressing problems today.

Real Madrid - Sergio Ramos

Madrid's defence is far from perfect, and the wave of injuries makes it even more tempting to think about who could strengthen the backline. Antonio Rudiger is in good form, of course, but Sergio Ramos in his prime would be a huge boost for the 'Los Blancos'. Even Carlo Ancelotti has paid tribute to the former captain: "If I am here now, it is only thanks to his goal against Atlético," the Italian said before the match against Sevilla this autumn.

Ramos in 2014 was a unique player who combined defensive skill with the character of a champion. Ancelotti knows Sergio's versatility well, having joked back in 2015 that he would even play him up front for a match.

Juventus - Pavel Nedved

Juventus have faced challenges in midfield in recent seasons, including long absences for Paul Pogba after a suspension and other setbacks for key players like Nicolo Fagioli due to disciplinary issues. The club has looked at potential reinforcements to help control the centre of the pitch.

Pavel Nedved didn't enjoy lasting success in his brief return to the club's coaching ranks, but the midfielder he was in his prime would be invaluable on the pitch. In the early 2000s, Nedved was one of Serie A's most complete midfielders, known for his engine, technical ability, and tactical intelligence.

He initially played on the left flank before becoming a central figure at Juventus, winning multiple league titles and earning the Ballon d'Or in 2003. Allegri would likely find a role that maximised Nedved's versatility, as few midfielders in the modern Italian game combine stamina, creativity, and all-round influence like he did in his peak years.

Arsenal - Robin van Persie

Of course, it would be easiest to bring back Thierry Henry in his prime, but Arteta's team is currently struggling for a proper striker. Neither Nketiah, Jesus, nor even Havertz can be relied upon to score 20+ goals in a season. That's why Robin van Persie from 2012, when he played alongside Arteta, would be a perfect fit for Arsenal.

Back then, the Dutchman almost single-handedly lifted the Gunners to third place in the Premier League, scoring 30 goals and providing 9 assists. Today, he would have much more skilled partners—apologies to Alex Song and Theo Walcott—making it entirely possible to replicate those numbers. In the end, van Persie would still earn his Premier League medal at the Emirates.

Barcelona - Neymar

Now imagine a restart of Neymar's career in a world where Messi has already moved to MLS. In 2015, Neymar was already approaching Messi's level. Today, he would be an ideal addition for Barcelona, providing goals and breathing new life into Robert Lewandowski's attack.

Reports suggest Xavi was hesitant about Neymar in the summer, but no one in their right mind could refuse a player in his prime with his career still ahead. In the 2014/15 season, the Brazilian registered 22 assists in La Liga and became Barca's top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals. Barcelona could definitely use a Neymar like that.

Liverpool - Luis Suarez

With Darwin Núñez struggling in attack, many Merseyside fans fondly remember his compatriot. Suarez's effectiveness at Liverpool was lethal, his productivity off the charts, and players like Sterling and Sturridge looked even more formidable alongside him. Still, there was a sense of incompleteness, as he narrowly missed out on major honours with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. Circumstances beyond the striker's control prevented him from winning the Premier League.

There is always a place for a player like him in Klopp's system. Suarez adapts perfectly to his partners, so there would be no issues with his interaction with Salah. "Every player in the world dreams of working with Klopp," the Uruguayan once said.

Manchester United - Rio Ferdinand

Ideally, it would be amazing to bring Alex Ferguson and his "golden era" back to the current Manchester United. But since we are focusing on players, our choice falls elsewhere. Every position in the Red Devils' squad could use reinforcement, but considering how Ten Hag revived Maguire—previously written off—and then brought back Evans, almost forgotten by fans, defence stands out as a priority.

Rio Ferdinand was part of the best centre-back duo in Manchester United's history, and we give him preference over Vidic. His transfer to Manchester United was a record for defenders at the time, but he more than justified the investment with his performances. Today, the club is missing a player of his calibre and confidence, making Ferdinand our clear pick.

Milan - Alessandro Nesta

It's not because Milan's situation is ideal that they recall Matteo Gabbia from his loan at Villarreal; the club still desperately needs centre-backs, especially after Fikayo Tomori's injury. That's why we didn't choose Kaka, Shevchenko, or Ibrahimović—prime Nesta is what the team needs right now.

Sandro defended just as effectively against old-school legends like Totti and Del Piero as he did against Messi in his prime. Ibrahimović even called him the perfect defender with a winner's mentality. Perhaps it was this mindset that Milan lacked at the end of last season—and still lack today.

Borussia Dortmund - Ilkay Gundogan

Over the last decade, Dortmund has seen so many stars that bringing back any of them would be a boost: Lewandowski, Götze, Mkhitaryan, Haaland, Bellingham, Yarmolenko—but Terzic's current team seems to need a system-building player.

Gundogan left Borussia when he was 25—the beginning of his prime—but he was already a leader. Ilkay can cover any role in midfield, from the defensive 'six' to playing behind the striker, as he did under Pep Guardiola. Last season, Dortmund had a shaky start but finished strong in May. Prime Gundogan might not have guaranteed a title, but he would certainly have added stability and class.

Bayern Munich - Thomas Muller

Here we take a slightly different approach and skip obvious choices like Ribéry, Robben, or Franz Beckenbauer. Bayern Munich currently needs a player with Muller's profile, but Thomas is not getting any younger. It's no coincidence his contract was extended in December; the club knows very few players like him exist today.

In his prime, Muller combined goal-scoring and playmaking with an extraordinary work ethic. Imagine just cloning Thomas and collecting trophies in the future.

Chelsea - Didier Drogba

No single player can save the current Chelsea squad, but the team's finishing problems are impossible to ignore. Nkunku and Jackson are currently better suited to highlight reels than a club aiming for at least a top-four finish. Drogba at his best was not only a goal machine but also a true team leader.

He would also fit seamlessly into the style of Pochettino's current squad, making his integration that much easier.
