The Scenic Football Grounds of Europe with Excellent Fishing Spots Nearby

The Scenic Football Grounds of Europe with Excellent Fishing Spots Nearby

While many football stadiums arise from tightly compact urban areas, some manage to secure particularly scenic spots by their city's or town's waterways. Just last year, the rise of the Allsvenskan team Mjällby brought some particularly scenic images to the headlines, showing their stadium was mere minutes away from the sea.

Of course, Strandvallen and its 6,000 capacity isn't the only ground that is near some particularly idyllic bodies of water. Many are close enough that, were you to rock up and cast a line, you'd likely be able to hear the action taking place within the stadium nearby, enabling some fans to enjoy a bit of both at the weekend.

A Growing Interest in Fishing Among Fans

Angling participation across the UK is on the rise, likely due to a series of fishing entertainment products hitting the mainstream and becoming popular. Of course, helping to spur football fans into some fishing has been the subtle increase in players coming forward to declare themselves as avid anglers.

Phil Foden of Manchester City has famously spent his downtime by the nearby waterways to cast a line and get away from it all. Likewise, Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa loves himself some fishing. Whenever he goes back to Brazil, the Angling Times reports, he'll be going fishing with his family and friends at some point.

Beyond footballers promoting the pastime, we've also seen shows like Gone Fishing and River Monsters gain hefty audiences in recent years, as well as slots online becoming among the most popular creations of their category. Since the Fishin' Frenzy slot was released in 2014, its trailblazing fishing feature has become a big draw for players.

The low-medium volatility slot shows fish swimming up and down the reels, carrying bigger and bigger cash values in the base game. Trigger the feature, and you get a chance to catch those fish. It plays heavily into the quiet moments of waiting for a bite before the explosion of action when there's a fish on the line.

Fishing Close to Great Football Grounds

Starting in the UK, one of the most scenic stadiums around is the City Ground. The home of Nottingham Forest is backed onto the banks of the River Trent, with lush green slopes running between it and the waterways. Close by, you can settle down near Trent Bridge and get to some fishing in an idyllic spot.

Going a fair bit further afield, you might just find yourself at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia in Italy. The home of Como, who enjoyed a brief stay in Serie A recently, is very close to one of the small ports of the famed Lake Como. You're just a few minutes of walking away from the shoreline that's regularly seating a fair few local anglers.

Keeping with the warmer climates, we'd then point you to Estadio Riazor. This is the home of the shock 1999/00 La Liga champions, Deportivo La Coruña. Their ground in the city of A Coruña, which holds over close to 32,500 fans on match days, is right next to Riazor Beach, which is a great place to fish thanks to the rocky waters nearby.

Fishing and football might not seem like they go hand-in-hand, and many footballers like the activity because it's so different. Yet, there are a few stadiums that are perfectly placed to let you enjoy a bit of both, all in one.
