Darren Bent Requested the Rule Change after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's Yellow Card

Darren Bent Requested the Rule Change after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's Yellow Card

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card during the new season. He had to miss a match against Crystal Palace, which became a problem for a struggling team. The referee's decision started debates over the disciplinary system in the Premier League. Is football overly regulated? Does it make sense for referees to hand out yellow cards for the slightest mistakes? Former striker Darren Bent believes it's time for a real change.

Darren Bent: "It's Ridiculous"

Darren Bent mentions the need to change the rules of giving yellow cards during the games. He says that players get punished for anything. Referees don't even give a warning before showing a yellow card. The rules are too strict, which makes the game less exciting. This trend also has a negative impact on national football. Bookmakers like MyBet have to change their betting odds due to unexpected yellow cards and penalties.

Former referee Mark Clattenburg supported Dewsbury-Hall. He is convinced that the referred could show more discretion. Dewsbury-Hall was clearly winning the ball. His foot only caught his opponent in the follow-through. It was a gaming situation that didn't involve any intentional damage. Clattenburg's support adds weight to the argument that referees may be too eager to punish players for every little thing.

Impact on Everton

For Everton, the suspension couldn't come at a worse time. Dewsbury-Hall is a central player to Everton this season. He makes a great contribution with his defensive work and attacks.

Everton has already experienced a series of injuries. Manager David Moyes had to prepare his team for the game against Crystal Palace without one of his best midfielders. Even though Everton managed to win the game, the struggle was real. The team's recent results aren't impressive, making them slide to the mid-table of the Premier League. Losing Dewsbury-Hall or any other top player could further worsen their situation.

A Growing Problem Across the League

Dewsbury-Hall's suspension is not a single case. The number of yellow cards in the Premier League has significantly increased over the years. Players are now punished for holding a ball for too long, pushing a rival, and celebrating a goal. The five-yellow-card rule initially aimed to stop offenders. But it now targets players who just play football.

Bent is not alone in calling for reform. Jamie O'Hara and Danny Murphy have expressed similar concerns. They claim that football is losing its edge because referees are afraid to let the game flow. Just look at the La Liga. The Spanish football league resets players' yellow cards midway through the season. Their system aims to reward improvements and avoid punishing players for minor mistakes. Many believe the Premier League should use the same approach.

Does the current yellow card system serve its purpose? The intent behind the rule is valid. But when players are punished for marginal or emotional reactions, it makes the game robotic. Bent says that we shouldn't take emotion out of football. Without it, the game won't be interesting to watch. Fans seem to agree. A recent online poll found that 72% of respondents supported the idea of increasing the number of yellow cards from five to seven. Will it solve the problem? Most likely no. But it's good that Brent has started the debates. So the change might come soon.
