Bilbao's San Mames Stretched to the Limit as 80,000 Fans Watch United Edge Spurs

Bilbao, a city with a population of approximately 345,000, faced an unprecedented influx of football fans as it hosted the 2025 UEFA Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The San Mames Stadium, with a reduced capacity of 49,600 for the final, was the focal point of this significant event. Despite its relatively small size, Bilbao has a history of hosting major sporting events, including the Women's Champions League final in 2024 and European Rugby finals in 2018.

The arrival of up to 80,000 fans from the UK posed logistical challenges for the city. Bilbao's airport, located 12km from the city centre, experienced a record 282 flights on the day of the final. Direct flights from the UK were limited, leading many fans to opt for indirect routes or alternative modes of transport, including ferries and long-distance drives. Some fans even took a 33-hour ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, highlighting the lengths supporters would go to attend the match.

Big occasions like the Europa League final always generate plenty of interest among punters, and this one was no different. Many chose to place their bets through the best non GamStop sports betting platforms, drawn in by the better odds, fewer limitations, and wider market variety compared to more traditional UK-licensed bookmakers. These sites might not comply with self-exclusion schemes in the UK, but they tend to offer more flexibility in terms of bet types, higher stake limits, and quicker sign-up processes - all of which are major draws for experienced bettors. With pre-match odds sitting at around 3/1 for a Spurs win and 2/1 for United, the game's unpredictability only added to the excitement and value these alternative platforms provided.

Accommodation in Bilbao was another significant challenge. With an estimated 13,000 hotel beds, the city struggled to accommodate the influx of visitors. Hotel prices soared, with some central hotels charging over £1,800 per night. Many fans resorted to alternative arrangements, including staying in nearby towns, booking hostels, or even sleeping in parks to avoid exorbitant costs. One Manchester United fan recounted sleeping on a bench in a park due to the high accommodation prices.

Despite the logistical challenges, the atmosphere in Bilbao remained largely positive. Local police reported minor clashes between supporters in Bilbao and nearby San Sebastian, but no arrests were made. The general mood among fans was friendly, with both sets of supporters coexisting peacefully in the city. Security measures included three security rings around the stadium and over 1,500 officers on duty, ensuring the safety of all attendees.

Each team was allocated approximately 15,000 tickets for the final, with the remaining tickets distributed among UEFA sponsors and neutral fans. Designated fan zones were established in separate areas of the city: Manchester United's in Etxebarria Parkea and Tottenham's in Ametzola. These zones provided entertainment, refreshments, and a communal space for fans to gather before the match. Notably, Manchester United's fan zone featured performances from club legends and musicians, enhancing the pre-match experience.

Tottenham Hotspur clinched a 1-0 win over Manchester United, with Brennan Johnson netting the decisive goal just before half-time in the 42nd minute. This win marked Tottenham's first major trophy in 17 years and their third UEFA Cup/Europa League title. The victory also secured their qualification for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. Despite Manchester United's dominance in possession and shots on goal, they were unable to break through Tottenham's defence.

The influx of fans and the successful hosting of the final demonstrated Bilbao's capability to manage large-scale sporting events. The city's infrastructure, combined with the cooperation of local authorities and the general goodwill of fans, ensured the event proceeded smoothly. The experience also highlighted the passion and dedication of football supporters, willing to overcome significant obstacles to support their teams.
