5 biggest football stadiums in Hungary

5 biggest football stadiums in Hungary

Hungary may not be everyone's first thought when talking about football, but our Eastern European friends have an illustrious history with the beautiful game. With legendary players like Ferenc Puskas, the country made it to the World Cup final in both 1938 and 1954, narrowly losing out to Italy and West Germany respectively.

Whilst it might not be one of Europe's biggest tourist hotspots, the beautiful city of Budapest welcomes around 4.5 million visitors a year. Those visitors are treated to two ultra-modern stadiums with fantastic facilities which locals love. The same locals pass their time on casino sites such as ICE Casino - especially when travelling to matches.

Here's a complete run down of the top 5 biggest stadiums you can visit in Hungary.

Puskas Arena, Budapest - 67,215

The Puskas Arena is named after legendary player Ferenc Puskas. The modern arena can seat just under 70,000 fans and is by far the largest stadium in the country. It is also one of the largest football stadiums in Europe.

Opened in 2019 at a cost of over €500m, the stadium serves as the home of the Hungarian national team as well as the annual Hungarian cup final.

The stadium meets the requirements for UEFA matches and has hosted a number of prestigious games including 4 games at Euro 2020, 4 matches in the 2021 Champions League knockout stages and two matches in the 2021 Europa League knockout phase. The stadium will also host the 2023 Europa League final at the end of May.

Groupama Arena, Budapest - 23,700

The Groupama Arena (or Ferencvaros Stadion, if you prefer the unsponsored name) is the home of Ferencvaros - Hungary's most successful football team with a record 33 league titles.

The stadium was first opened in 2014 and has a capacity of just under 24,000. It was built on the site of the club's former home (Florian Albert Stadium) at a cost of €40m.

The stadium has hosted more than 20 Hungary international matches and 5 national cup finals whilst the Puskas Arena was under construction.

Nagyerdei Stadion, Debrecen - 20,340

Moving out of the capital, the 3rd largest ground in Hungary is Nagyerdei Stadion, home to Debreceni VSC. Debreceni are the country's most successful team this century with 7 league titles to their name.

The stadium was opened in 2014 at a cost of €40m and has hosted 2 Hungary internationals. It also served as a temporary home to the Qatar national team as they played 3 warm-up matches there in preparation for the 2022 World Cup.

ETO Park, Gyor - 15,600

ETO Park is a 15,000 capacity stadium located in Gyor to the north west of the country - approximately halfway between Budapest and Bratislava.

The ground was first opened in 2008 and serves as the home stadium for Gyori ETO. Despite being the 4th biggest stadium in the country attendances are poor with the club never having attracted an average crowd of more than 5,000 since it opened.

The stadium hosted 4 national team matches between 2010 and 2014 with mixed results - 1 win, 1 defeat and 2 draws.

Diosgyori Stadion, Miskolc - 15,325

Last in our list is Diosgyori Stadion located in the city of Miskolc in the north east of the country, close to the border with Slovakia. This 15,000 capacity arena was opened in 2018 at a cost of 10.9bn Hungarian forints - approximately £25m.

The stadium is home to Diosgyori VTK and built on the site of their old stadium. Interestingly, the newest of the old stadium's stands was retained, with 3 new stands built - so it's not technically completely new. It was built in a 'British-style' with the old stadium's running track removed and stands built as close to the pitch as possible.
