About progers

The above details would, for many, seem to suggest I'm some sort of saddo git with no life other than a mind full of football stats. In reality I'm some sort of saddo git with no life but who did find a great website for footie stats. See ESPN.co.uk

First Game

Charlton Athletic 1-1 Orient
Tuesday 23 Mar 1976
The Valley
League Div 2 (old)

I don't remember too much about the game except that I went twice more that season (a 1-1 home draw vs. Chelsea and a 0-4 home defeat vs. Bolton) buy which time I was hooked. That was almost 40 years ago !!

Best Game

One that has always stood out for me is:

Charlton Athletic 3-4 Chelsea
Tuesday 24 November 1981
The Valley
League Div 2 (old)

an early goad for Chelsea, some superb long range strikes from both clubs but most memorable, were how brilliant the Chelsea (away) fans were. The took over the relatively new Jimmy Seed stand and engaging in continuous singing for the entire 90 mins. Never before had I seen 3,000 people similtaneously stand to the tune of "one many went to mo...". Hilarious. The fact myself and a school pal (both of us just 14 yrs) were sitting in the middle of the West stand surrounded by Chelsea-fans made it all the more "weird".

In terms of sheer footballing drama, of course it has to be:

Charlton Athletic 4-4 Sunderland (Charlton win 7-6 on pens)
Monday 23 May 1998
Wembley Stadium (old)
League Div 1 play-off final

So, so proud of the lads that day!

Worst Game

probably

Charlton Athletic 0-1 Millwall
Sat 21 September 2013
The Valley
Championship

Okay, I was actually in a York hotel watching the game live on Sky TV so technically shouldn't really count. But we were so God damn awful it deserved to me mentioned.

As for games I actually attended, well I think this one is up (or rather down) there:

Charlton Athletic 0-1 Grimsby Town
Sat 18 September 1982
The Valley
Div 2 (old)

If my memory is correct the goal only came in the last few mins when the ball became stuck in our mud-bath of a penalty box. It's suffering the torrential rain at the top of the old East Terrace - rather than the poor quality football (which as you might imagine was pretty poor) that I recall most vividly.

Old Trafford

the sheer size of it hit me as I walked from the away end bar to my seat. being among 10,000 Charlton (away) fans bouncing and singing "Things can only get better" at half-time moments after Peter Schmeichell had been sent off just about sums up all that is good about soccer. Just a pity Mark Hughes scores in the first minute of the second half.

the hard seats at Burnley's Turf Moor take a bit of getting used to. But for overall facilities overall, I guess i'd say Whitby Town's Turnball Ground
