johnwickenden's review of Penydarren Park

Visited here on 22/11/2016 to see a Southern League Premier Division top-of-the table clash between Merthyr and Leamington.
Penydarren Park is a old ground which, apart from the new office block has pretty much reached the extent of it's modernisation. Merthyr did try to move out to a new stadium on the edge of town a few yeaars back but this was, I think, blocked by the Welsh Assembly, so they live with what they have. Despite all it's faults, the ground has character, more so than modern, more soulless arenas.

Location

Located in the back streets just north of the town centre. It's walking distance from the station (about 10 mins) and pubs / places to eat. The ground itself is at the dead end on a small lane, but does have a large car park on site. There is road parking nearby also.

View

The entrance to the ground is to the rear of the main stand, which itself runs from the corner flag at the right hand end to just past the halfway line. I sat in here for the first half but found that there were quite a number of seats broken or damaged. There is another covered all seater stand behind the left hand goal (behind which is the car park). The right hand end is an uncovered terrace, about 10 steps high and is slightly decaying. The far side of the ground is a long covered terrace, again an old park of the ground.

Facilities

Toilets were behind the main stand, there might have been others. The club shop is also to the rear of the main stand and sells, shirts, scarfes etc

Food & Drink

Next to the club shop is a small room in which they sold hot drinks only. There appeared to be a concessions stand on the left hand end of the covered terrace which sold chips etc, but I didn't buy anything

Atmosphere

Crowd for the match was 487 with at least 100 away supporters in good voice throughout. The home fans seemed to be pretty vocal and at times the noise generated seemed to indicate a much higher attendance figure
