johnwickenden's review of Julius Martin Lane

Visited on 25th October 2016 for a Ryman League, Division 1 North match against Norwich United. A midweek game against newly promoted and high flying opponents with Soham having been struggling, I thought this might not be a good game for the home side an a small crowd would be present. Actually Soham pummelled their opponents, winning 4-0 in front of a boisterous crowd of 112.

Location

Soham has no rail links - the nearest stations are either Ely or Newmarket. The ground is located a few hundred yards to the north of the town centre. There is a large car park adjacent to the ground and there is plenty of street parking. Pubs are within easy walking distance.

View

The ground has cover of three sides (not two as previously stated in another review). The turnstiles are located next to the clubhouse with the main stand beyond. Views from the Stand are raised above the touchline and entry to the seats are via a set of steps to the top of the stand. Beyond the stand is a covered terrace. There are also covered terraces at either end, running the full length behind both goals. Views from the main stand are reasonable although there are a couple of stanchions partially obscuring the view. The fact that there is cover on three sides makes this ground quite unique in this level

Facilities

Toilets are inside the clubhouse. There is no club shop but badges could be bought from the bar

Food & Drink

Drinks etc from the bar in the clubhouse. There was a burger van next to the turnstiles, but I didn\'t buy anything so I can\'t comment on prices

Police & Stewards

None

Atmosphere

I guess this was a fairly local derby (compared to some in this Division) and the Soham support was quite noisy. They certainly made it sound like there were more than 112 in the ground. Can\'t say I noticed any away fans (must be a Norwich thing)
