facebook-user-68804's review of Glebe Sports Ground

I visited the Glebe Ground on a cold night in February. As the ground is on the top of a hill facing up the Tyne Valley it was bitterly cold and snowed towards the end of the game. Don't be put off though, for fans of the non league game this is a must-do venue.

The ground is shared with the local cricket team, and as such, it is a ground that has 3 sides for spectators, the other side being the cricket outfield. There is cover for seated spectators and standing ones behind the goal at the east end of the ground. The view of the pitch is a little obscured by some pillars, but on a cold winters evening, the roof protecting you from the snow is more than welcome. The Corner Flag Cafe (how posh does that sound!?) is also welcoming, and better stiill your hot drink comes in a mug!. To add to the feel of the place there are "proper" floodlights, one in each corner. All-in-all well worth a visit - I will definitely be back, but may wait until it's warmer!

As for the match, it was a humdinger! Visitors Seaham Red Star were 2-0 up within 10 minutes, Whicham however kept plugging away and scored 2 goals to draw level just before half-time. In the 2nd half Whickham had 3 players sent off with Seaham also having a player dismissed! Seaham ran out 6-2 winners, then the snow started to fall...Brrrrr

Location

Not far from the village centre along Rectory Lane, there is more than enough parking.

Nearest Rail Station is Metro-Centre then a Bus (GO North East 43 or 44 to Durham!) or a Taxi. For the fit you could walk, but the hill rises 131 meters/430feet from Station to ground 2 miles away! The 43/4 bus runs between Newcastle and Durham.

View

On a nice day it would be nice. I sought protection behind a pillar from the biting cold wind.

The pillars in the stand will impede your view, but more than enough space for 100% view of the game.

Facilities

More than adequate for this level of football.

Food & Drink

Hot Dog 80p Pie £1 tea/coffee/bovril 60p (in a mug!) soft drink 25p. Crisps and chocolate bars also available. Good quality.

Police & Stewards

Atmosphere

Must be said, it may be the altitude or something, but there wasn't one!
