New MLS expansion side Charlotte FC have set a new all-time MLS attendance record.
The North Carolina club attracted a crowd of 74,479 for the first ever home game. The match was played at Bank of America Stadium which the club are sharing with the Carolina Panthers NFL team.
The previous attendance record for an MLS match was set at the 2018 MLS Cup Final when 73,019 watched Atlanta United beat Portland Timbers 2-0 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta.
Charlotte FC's attendance is bigger than any Premier League attendance in the last 3 years.

New MLS expansion outfit Charlotte FC are to spend $50m to prepare the Bank of America stadium for its MLS debut.
Charlotte will join the MLS for the 2022 season and will play at Carolina Panthers' NFL stadium. The stadium will become one of the biggest in MLS, capable of holding more than 75,000 fans. However, the club anticipates that it will only open the lower tier for most games, capping capacity at around 40,000.
Changes made for the MLS will include expanded entrances, new soccer locker rooms and a central players' tunnel. The improvements also include a 210-foot wide LED screen, as well as upgraded concourses, more food and drink kiosks and a limited capacity new tunnel bar.
Charlotte FC will join the MLS Eastern Conference next season.
Wednesday 18th December 2019
The MLS is growing fast and has just announced its 30th expansion team: Charlotte, based in North Carolina.
The team will join the league for the start of the 2021 season and will play their home matches at the 67,000 capacity Bank of America stadium (home to the Carolina Panthers NFL team).
Whilst the announcement may come as a surprise to some, Charlotte is actually the 16th biggest city in the US with more inhabitants than Atlanta, San Francisco, Miami and Las Vegas. The city has previously hosted 2 European pre-season games, attracting crowds of over 60,000 for both Liverpool v AC Milan (in 2014) and PSG vs Chelsea (in 2015).
The MLS East club will be built from the ground up - currently the only thing we know is the stadium. The team's colours, crest and even name will all be announced in due course.
The next couple of years are a busy time for the league with 5 new teams joining in the next 3 seasons:
It is possible that the league will expand further with franchises rumoured for Las Vegas, Phoenix, Indianapolis and Raleigh, North Carolina.
